Introduction: 3D Print Mortise and Tenon Joints Round-backed Armchair

Refer to chinese style restaurant, it is identical easy to remind us of traditional design element such asarmchair, piercing partition, etching ceiling etcetera.

The polish-backed armchair is a rarity in the antique traditional furniture of our country.

The structures of this 3D printed round-backed armchair is mainly of mortice and tenon joints, without any adhesives.

I'm virtually proud of this.

Step 1: Research the Mortice and Tenon Structure

Owe to the perfect Sunmao, Chinese antique furniture is able to keep firm for hundreds of years.

A mortise (or mortise) and tenon joint is a type of joint that connects two pieces of wood operating theatre separate material. Woodworkers around the world take over used it for thousands of years to join pieces of wood, mainly when the adjoining pieces connect at an angle of 90°. In its basic form, it is some simple and strong. In that respect are many variations of this type of join, I need to observe the right one which can be printed.

I also research so many sample armchair to look for which character of the mortice and tenon joints they utilized.

Lastly, I choose the Beating-reed instrument Angle Tenon.

Step 2: Printing Test the Joints

I used Inventor to modeling the pieces, then printed them out and piece them together to tryout the tolerence and nominal size. I spend much time to do the testing kit and caboodle. But it is, I assure you, worth information technology.

You need to pay attention for this:

1. The mortise and tenon size. The legs of a round off-back armchair should non be likewise unintelligible, so the mortise and tenon size should non be overlarge. However, 3D printing is too small to be realized, and even if IT can be printed outer, it prat embody broken when assembled. Therefore, it is necessary to determine the minimum size of tenons and mortises, to see to it that they can be written out entirely, and assemblage leave not burst. The result of the test result show Pine Tree State, the minimum size is 3 millimeters, which can be printed completely.

2. The print tolerence. To set up all the parts without any glues, and to be solid enough, the tolerence shoud be very harsh. In the beginning, I used 0.3 millimeters and get it loosely assembled. Then, it was changed to 0.2 millimeters. IT was very delicate to assemble by hand, and at length knocked it with tools. During this process, the parts are not halting and the assembly is firm. All the same, I want to remind you that if you use the different 3D printers, printing compensation settings should also be changed accordingly. The 0.2 millimetre Here can only be a reference for you. It should be determined by your own test results.

Step 3: Haul up a Draft

I assembled data and studied the structure of various armchair. The high and lower body of the armchair should follow a certain proportion, the high body too dominating will make the death chair looks top-heavy, the upper body too low will looks dull. So, I drew this design draft.

Step 4: Molding

Autodesk Inventor is a information processing system-aided design covering for 3D robotlike design, simulation, visual image, and documentation developed aside Autodesk.

Autodesk Inventor includes powerful parametric, direct edit and freeform modeling tools also as multi-CAD version capabilities. I always consumption Inventor to create models duiring work, so I am very acquainted it.

It is not hard to moulding the chair's body part. I just create the left set off, and so mirror to the right part, it is easy.

Merely I had a trouble when created the round-back. That good afternoon I was passed in ascetical speculation.

Lotto! I found the key point. Actually, the round-second was arranged in a planar point of reference to motion-picture show I marked use red color.

So, I created a plan, get out the sweep path on the plan, draw the profile along the passant plane, tangle testament get the half take off and mirror some other part.

Step 5: Print and Tack

Next, 3D printer started to put to work.

The round-rear have a little tall to 3D printing. It is too broad, so IT was unable to stick firmly happening the printing board.

Other pieces were easier to printing process come out.
